Vermont House Front Door

The house consists of two parts, a two-story main section and a single story annex.  Each section, while part of the same building, can be occupied and used independently of the other, or can be enjoyed as a whole with space to comfortably accommodate up to ten people.

The house has been thoroughly renovated, is insulated, has three separately controlled heat zones, and modern kitchens with cherry cabinets and hardwood floors.  Bathrooms have modern fixtures and marble floors.

Nestled on a private one acre, the house was built in 1902 on land formerly owned by Joseph Battell.  Mr. Battell, in his will, deeded over 30,000 acres surrounding this property to Middlebury College in 1915, including the adjacent property that became Middlebury’s Bread Loaf campus.

We were so happy to be staying in this beautiful property adjacent to the nordic center and a short drive to Midd Snowbowl…we ended up spending hours by the beautiful warm fireplaces in the property. We cannot say enough about the selection of books, great coffee mugs, and ample blankets and couches in which to snuggle up!”  February 8, 2023

Idyllic setting, incredible house
This house is amazing, beautiful views and lovely house. Close to hiking at Breadloaf and the Long Trail. We came for a graduation and had college age kids up to 80+ grandparents at various points during the weekend and the house let us be together when we wanted and spread out when we wanted. The extra first floor apartment was a nice space for the grandparents who don’t like stairs. This house is also extremely well stocked and could host a larger gathering like a grad party or large dinner party. Highly recommend!” 5/31/2022

The Vermont House is located in the heart of the Green Mountains, in Robert Frost country, on Route 125 in Ripton, Vermont.  The one-acre property is bordered by open fields, National Forest and Middlebury College’s summer campus at Bread Loaf.

The house is surrounded by trails that provide countless opportunities for hiking, biking and cross country skiing right from the front door.

Within two miles of the house there is downhill skiing at Middlebury College’s Snowbowl, scenic walking trails on land formerly owned by Robert Frost, and more rigorous hiking on the Long Trail.

Within a short distance are countless other attractions including some of the most famous downhill slopes in the East, fishing, boating and swimming in the numerous lakes and streams, and of course, the opportunity to be enveloped by the beauty that is Vermont’s foliage season, a kaleidoscope of Fall Colors!

The Vermont House at Bread Loaf is approximately a five hour drive from the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut metropolitan area, and a three and a half hour drive from Boston.  It is within an hour and a quarter of both the Burlington Airport and the Rutland Amtrak station.
