The Vermont House at Bread Loaf

Vermont House Front Door

Available for  2020 Middlebury Graduation & Reunion, Bread Loaf Summer School…

The house was built in 1902 on land formerly owned by Joseph Battell.  Mr. Battell, in his will, deeded over 30,000 acres surrounding this property to Middlebury College in 1915, including the adjacent property that became Middlebury’s Bread Loaf campus.

The house itself consists of two parts, a two-story main section and a single story annex.  Each of these two sections, while part of the same building, can be occupied and used entirely independently of the other, or can be enjoyed as a whole with space to comfortably accommodate up to ten people.

The house was thoroughly renovated in 1999, is insulated, has three separately controlled zones of oil/hot water heat, and modern kitchens with cherry cabinets and hardwood floors.  Bathrooms all have modern fixture and marble floors.

Our Vacation Home is perfect for:

The Vermont House is located in the heart of the Green Mountains, in Robert Frost country, on Route 125 in Ripton, Vermont.  The one-acre property is bordered by open fields, National Forest and Middlebury College’s summer campus at Bread Loaf.

Bread Loaf is approximately a five hour drive from the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut metropolitan area, and a three and a half hour drive from Boston.  It is within an hour and a quarter of both the Burlington Airport and the Rutland Amtrak station.

The house is surrounded by trails that provide countless opportunities for hiking, biking and cross country skiing right from the front door.

Within two miles of the house there is downhill skiing at Middlebury College’s Snowbowl, scenic walking trails on land formerly owned by Robert Frost, and more rigorous hiking on the Long Trail.

Within a short distance are countless other attractions including some of the most famous downhill slopes in the East, fishing, boating and swimming in the numerous lakes and streams, and of course, the opportunity to be enveloped by the beauty that is Vermont’s foliage season.
